The Red Sox finished their 2010 season with a weekend series
at Fenway Park against the rival New York Yankees. Red Sox Destinations
travelers were in town to catch the Fall Baseball action. Fans stayed in the
middle of Boston at the Boston
Marriott Copley Place
.  The Friday
forecast brought rain and Red Sox fans waited hours until officials finally
deemed the weather conditions too poor to play baseball for the evening.

Red Sox Destinations headed to Fenway on Saturday to begin
their weekend of VIP Red Sox activities. The weather was beautiful and fans
were in high spirits despite the previous nights’ rainout.  Travelers were brought into the Green Monster
to begin their VIP tour.  If you look
closely you can see autographs on the walls from past Legends who have played
inside Fenway!

Other stops on the tour included on checking out the view
from the top of the Monster and inside the Press Box! Check out a couple

Next, fans enjoyed their buffet lunch in the EMC Club took
part in a pre-game reception.  The 2004
& 2007 World Series Rings were shown to travelers who were able to try them
on a take photos.

Red Sox infielder Jed Lowrie joined the group to take
photos, sign autographs and meet with fans! Jed shared stories about growing up
in Oregon, playing baseball at Stanford, and his experiences in the Major Leagues.
You can see Jed wearing his Cardinal hat in the photo below; Jed played
baseball there for three years before being drafted to the MLB. Fans were able
to ask Jed all sorts of questions and gave everyone insight on what it’s like
to be a professional baseball player.

Because of the rainout on Friday, Red Sox Destinations fans
were able to watch three Red Sox games in less than twenty-four hours. Saturday’s
game starting at 4:10pm was taken into extra innings as both teams were tied at
five run a piece.  The Red Sox lost game
one unfortunately but Red Sox Destinations fans stuck around for the second
half of the double header. After a quick turnaround, the Sox started a late
night game at 9:00pm. Red Sox Destinations fans had more to cheer about in game
two as the Sox pulled off a win with a walk off hit from Eric Patterson. Sleepy
Destinations travelers made the short trek back to the Copley Marriott to rest
up for their last game of the Sunday afternoon game. Sunday proved to be
another day of great weather. Red Sox fans weren’t disappointed as the Sox beat
the Yankees 8-4 to finish off the season with a win.  Red Sox Destinations fans were able to see
the Red Sox finish their season, all while getting the great experience of gaining
VIP access to historic Fenway Park and meeting a Red Sox player!

Boston August 20th – 22nd

The Destinations crew was in Boston to watch the Red Sox take on the Toronto Blue Jays. Fans stayed at the centrally located, Boston Marriott Copley Place, and the Fenway-neighboring, Hotel Commonwealth. Friday night’s weather couldn’t have been better for opening the weekend series.  The Blue Jays lead the majors in home runs and displayed their powerful offense on Friday as they blasted hits off all-star lefty, Jon Lester. The Jays posted nine earned runs off Lester during his two inning appearance; the Jays had 20 hits on the night. The Sox lost the game with a disappointing final score of 16-2.

Destinations travelers forgot about the lost and headed to Fenway excited on Saturday afternoon for the day of events. The day kicked off with a VIP tour lead by Red Sox expert, Andrew, who shared his in depth knowledge about the Red Sox franchise and the historic Fenway Park.  Fans went directly onto the field and into the Green Monster; an opportunity that few Red Sox fans ever experience!  Check out a few of the pictures below:

Fans headed next to the EMC Club, the premier restaurant in Fenway Park.  A buffet lunch and drinks awaited fans, who were able to relax in the club area or sit outside in the club seats while enjoying their meals.  The 2004 and 2007 World Series Rings were brought out so fans could try on the rings and take photos!

Boston7 Ellsbury Photo 2.JPGNext, Ellsbury fielded questions from the group. He shared his experiences in the league and gave his insight to playing in Red Sox Nation. He told about his game day rituals, friendship with teammates and his off-season hobbies. Jacoby explained one of his most memorable baseball experiences, stealing home against Yankees’ lefty, Andy Pettite. Ellsbury went on to explain that stealing home is trumped by the feeling of winning the 2007 World Series, an experience that he said is what every baseball player dreams about. After Ellsbury left the group, Destinations travelers were able to rest up before the Saturday night game.

The second two games of the series went quite differently than the first.  Saturday night ended with a walk-off home run by Jed Lowrie! The game was close as both starters gave up four runs; Daisuke pitched eight innings while Jays’ Ricky Romero pitched seven.   Lowrie extended the eleventh inning when he missed an infield pop-up.  The mistake did not result in any Jays runs however when Lowrie stepped up to the plate later that inning, he quickly made up for his miscue by blasting his first career walk-off home run!

Boston7 On Monster.JPGSunday brought rain, as Destinations travelers headed back to Fenway to finish up the weekend series.  The game was delayed twice because of showers, and rain threatened in the area for the remainder of the day.  The game was played however, and Destination fans stuck it out to watch the Sox win the game and take the series. Those fans who stayed through the rain also got to see the rare event of David Ortiz hitting a triple! Ortiz’s hit started up the Sox’ offense. The Red Sox pitching, beginning with Buchholz, was on key as the team shut down the Jays’ hitters. The Red Sox took the series with a 5-0 win on Sunday.

Destinations travelers were able to witness a great weekend of baseball.  A walk-off win and a shut out provided plenty to cheer about as fans watched from the pavilion seats.  The VIP tour of Fenway, meeting Jacoby Ellsbury and relaxing in Boston topped off the weekend of fun and completed their ultimate Red Sox, Fenway Park experience!

New York August 6th – 8th

The Destinations team descended upon New York this past weekend as the Sox took on their rival New York Yankees. The Red Sox Destinations travelers were prepared to withstand the ridiculing and patronization from Yankees fans as the group ventured into the Bronx to the newly constructed Yankee Stadium. The crew stayed at the exceptionally comfortable and conveniently located (Mid Manhattan) New York Marriott East Side.

The start of the four game series featured Sox’ Buchholtz against Yanks’ Vazquez in a Friday night showdown. Red Sox’ bats provided six runs during the game as David Ortiz and newcomer, Ryan Kalish, both homered. Buchholz had a strong outing as he went 7.1 innings giving up nine hits and three runs. The Red Sox took game one of the series, and Destinations travelers were able to enjoy a quiet ride home on the Subway, as Yankees’ fans swallowed the loss.

The Destinations crew set out Saturday morning for their tour and reception at Yankee Stadium. The weather was excellent and travelers were in good spirits after the prior evening’s victory.  The group was escorted onto the field and into the Yankees’ dugout to soak up the views only seen by major league players.

Yankees’ Monument Park, a historic Yankees’ area transplanted from the old Yankee Stadium, was next on the list.  The center field park holds monuments to past players and has the retired Yankees numbers.

travelers asked Jed about his personal experiences in the league, the Red Sox/ Yankees rivalry, and other specific questions about competing at the major league level. Destinations travelers enjoyed a relaxing reception and got the chance to visit with other Red Sox’ fans and explore the new Yankee Stadium.

Saturday’s early evening game featured Boston’s John Lackey against New York’s CC Sabathia. The Red Sox jumped out to an early lead but couldn’t stay ahead as the Yankees posted five runs against Lackey over his six innings of work. Sabathia pitched eight strong innings; he held the Sox scoreless after their initial two runs in the second inning. Boston lost the game with a final score 5-2.

Lowrie Photo 2.jpgWith the series tied 1-1, Boston looked to Beckett to take on the Yankees’ Dustin Moseley on ESPN’s Sunday Night Baseball. Destinations travelers were hopeful to finish their weekend on a high note but the Yankees jumped out to an early lead in the second inning and held the lead for the game’s entirety.  Moseley allowed the Red Sox just two runs as he went 6.1 innings. The Yankees powered past the Red Sox with 12 hits in total, providing seven runs, enough to win the game and take a 2-1 lead on the series.

dugout 3.jpgUnfortunately, Destinations travelers weren’t around to witness the series tying victory on the fourth game of the series. However, the crew braved the sometimes harsh, Yankees Stadium atmosphere to support the Sox throughout the weekend. The chance to see the much talked about, new Yankee Stadium, along with the opportunities of watching great baseball, meeting a Red Sox player and sharing the experience with other Red Sox fans is something not soon to be forgotten.

Boston July 30th – August 1st

The Destinations crew was home at Fenway Park for a late July series against the Detroit Tigers. The group was staying at both the Marriott Copley Place, centrally located in Downtown Boston, as well as the Hotel Commonwealth, located right at Fenway! The mid-summer baseball action was an exciting experience for Destinations travelers as many ventured to Fenway for their first time while other travelers were returning after years from their last visit.

Friday night’s game was a late innings thriller as the Red Sox had only scored one run until the ninth inning; they were losing to the Tigers 6-1 headed into their last at bat. Tigers’ pitching had kept the Sox offense quiet until a ninth inning rally nearly brought the hometown team back into the game.  David Ortiz’ grand slam didn’t provide enough offense to tie the score as the Sox fell to the Tigers 6-5.

Saturday was a brighter day as Destinations travelers headed towards the historic Fenway Park for their VIP events! Fenway Park expert tour guides led fans directly onto the warning track and where the group had gained access inside the world famous, and extremely exclusive, Green Monster! Check out a few pictures below.

DSC_0124.JPGAfter the event, Destinations travelers stuck around Fenway to catch a Saturday night matchup and hoped for a different ending than the night prior.  The Tigers got off to an early lead and stayed ahead for almost the entire game.  More ninth inning heroics by David Ortiz were needed as the DH powered a bases clearing double for a walk-off win!  “Dirty Water” was played throughout Fenway as Sox fans rejoiced and Destinations travelers headed back to their hotels in a great mood!

Destinations travelers were hopeful Sunday that the Sox would pull off a win to take the series. Fans witnessed another close game as the Red Sox beat the Tigers 4-3 with another walk-off hit.  Despite Papelbon blowing a three run lead in the ninth, Sox batters rallied to pull off another late inning victory. Destinations travelers witnessed some great baseball on their weekend visit to Boston.  The historic setting of Fenway Park only added to the on-field success of the hometown team. Destinations were all pleased to have come to Fenway and each traveler had the experience of a lifetime!

Seattle July 23rd – 25th

Though perceived as being a cloudy city with frequent light rainfall, Seattle was nothing but sunshine for this late July weekend series. Red Sox faithful from all over joined to watch their Sox play the hometown Mariners this past weekend as the Red Sox DestiNations crew traveled to Seattle.  The ideal weather and beautiful Seattle waterfront provided the perfect backdrop for the weekend baseball getaway.  DestiNations travelers stayed at the centrally located Seattle Marriott Waterfront, located directly on the harbor and a short distance to many Seattle hotspots.

DestiNations travelers witnessed an exciting performance on Friday as Josh Beckett pitched his first return start since May.  Beckett looked strong throwing 5 2/3 innings and allowing one run.  The Red Sox were lifted as Bill Hall hit a home run in the 7th innings to put the Sox ahead.  The bullpen held strong as the Sox won 2-1.

DestiNations travelers arrived cheerful at Safeco Field on Saturday morning after the exciting win on Friday night. The events were kicked off by a tour of Safeco Field.  Mariners’ experts guided fans through the park and onto the warning track, as well as into the dugouts, press box and the premium club areas. Check out the great Safeco Field pictures below.

Next, fans enjoyed a lunch reception, full of ballpark food and beverages.  DestiNations staff brought the 2004 and 2007 World Series Rings and let fans pose with the impressive jewelry.

J.D. Drew joined fans at the reception where he signed autographs, posed for pictures and fielded questions from the group. Drew joked with the DestiNations group and travelers enjoyed Drew’s laid back personality and willingness to interact with everyone. Check out a few pictures from the reception below.

Saturday night’s game featured an exceptional outing by lefty Jon Lester, who pitched perfectly through 5 innings and struck out a total of 13 hitters.  Though his pitching was outstanding, his perfection was ended in the sixth inning. The team unraveled in later innings and ended up losing the game 5-1 as David Ortiz’s home run in the fourth was not enough run support to win the game.

Leading the series 2-1, the DestiNations crew was still hopeful Sunday that the Sox could end with a win and take the series 3-1. Daisuke Matsuzaka gave a solid performance, as he left the game in the sixth with a 2-1 lead.  Just six outs away from victory, the Sox surrendered 3 runs in the eighth inning with a bases loaded, two-run single that provided enough support for the Mariners to defeat the Sox 4-2.

Though the Red Sox had problems holding leads and providing enough offense, the starting pitching displayed a positive for the team. Nonetheless, DestiNations travelers experienced an exciting weekend full of baseball; the weather, Seattle waterfront and visits to Safeco Field were on an entirely different level than just watching the games from your living room couch.

Toronto July 9th – 11th

The Red Sox Destinations crew was in Toronto last weekend for the last series before the All Star break. During their visit to the lively city of Toronto, Destinations travelers stayed at the gorgeous Renaissance Toronto Hotel (http://www.marriott.com/hotels/travel/yyzbr-renaissance-toronto-downtown-hotel/) , which is actually attached to the Rogers Centre. Not only were guests able to enjoy a less than 5-minute walk from the hotel to the gates, but many got to take in some of the on-field activities from Arriba, which is the hotel’s lobby restaurant that overlooks the interior of the ballpark.

During Friday night’s game, Sox fans were treated to an offensive outburst that put the game away early, as the Red Sox scored 13 runs in the first 4 innings before going on to win 14-3. Jon Lester pitched 6 strong innings to secure his 11th win.

Tour Photo.JPG

Sunday’s game was a nail-biter, as the Red Sox jumped out to a 3-0 lead and were cruising before surrendering a homerun that cut the Red Sox lead to 3-2. Thankfully, Daniel Bard and Jonathan Papelbon were more than ready to seal the game in tidy fashion and secure a series victory for the Red Sox as they headed into the All-Star Break. Destinations travelers were excited to end the trip on a high note. Being able to take in a weekend of baseball in a unique city with other die-hard Red Sox fans is something that will stick with them for a lifetime!
